Do We Shine or Meld into the Dullness of the World?

Philippians 2:14-15 “Do EVERYTHING without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the universe.”

This scripture is overtly displayed under the molding at the top of the walls around our den so that we see it whenever we walk into the room. It has been pressed upon my heart for years and I intentionally put it there so it would be in front of our face every single day reminding us of God’s command.

The word “EVERYTHING” jumps out at me every time I read this scripture. God intends for our words to be edifying, encouraging, uplifting and a blessing to everyone He sends our way; however, if our focus is continually on what we are being deprived of or taking offense in every circumstance then how different are we than those that are in the world? We must seek to be intentionally positive and encouraging in every situation realizing that God is in control. There is always something to be thankful for though we may have to dig to find it in some situations. He allows every circumstance in our lives for a purpose and desires to use us to make a difference in His Kingdom. Be it having to wait for a table in a restaurant, being thrust into an uncomfortable situation, or in a dispute in the workplace I rest in the fact that God knows exactly what is happening and He will see us through it. We are not on display, but rather, it is our God working in us and when we begin complaining, we thwart any opportunity for God to use us in the very place He positioned us. His plans are perfect, His intentions are pure, and His faithfulness is constant. Let us practice His presence in each situation we find ourselves in and shine like stars in the universe causing others to stop and wonder what we are all about. Are we making a difference, or have we melded into the monotony of the world’s ways?

Dear Lord,

In this present age the world only offers pain, hurt, devastation and heartbreak. We can choose to wallow in the weariness that it affords, or we can make every effort to rise up and walk with You in thanksgiving and peace. Help us to remember your Word and seek to be that shining light in the midst of the darkness around us. Show us how to display Your likeness to this lost and dying world. Guide us in the ways of righteousness and fill our mouths with encouraging words at every opportunity so that we will be a blessing to those around us. When we fail, please bring it to our attention and move us to change. Praise be to You, the one true God who’s love never fails, who’s kindness prevails and who’s grace is never ending. We love you!

In Jesus Name,

Amen
