Doing Right In The Eyes Of The Lord

2 Chronicles 29:1-2 "Hezekiah was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine years. His mother's name was Abijah daughter of Zechariah. He did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, just as his father David had done."

When we think about our lives and what our goals are or what we hope to achieve, what do we want others to remember about us? When God calls us home what will those closest to us reveal about our character? Will they remember our bank account balances? Our homes? Awards won? Pleasures experienced? Time spent working for personal gain? None of these things are necessarily “bad”; however, the best description of a life lived well is that you “did right in the eyes of the Lord”. Unfortunately, this descriptive will never happen unless we intentionally make every effort to make this mantra a priority in our lives. It requires choices, deliberate choosing to do what is right or what God desires.

In the context of relationships, God has commanded us to love one another, but we must be intentional about doing so. In the context of marriage, this relationship is a gift from God, do we make the choice to treasure our spouse? In the context of business, do we use fair and ethical practices? When it comes to selfishness verses family, do we set ourselves aside to serve those God has entrusted to our care? When we think about paying taxes, do we report everything honestly? If we take any segment of our lives and let this statement guide us we will be amazed at how much closer our relationship with the Lord will be and we will pave the way for others to recognize that "we do right in the eyes of the Lord".

Dear Lord,

We want to be known as those who did right in the eyes of the Lord. Guide every decision we make and help us to foster every relationship we have so that when our time on earth is over there will be absolutely no doubt in anyone’s mind that our ultimate goal was to bring glory and honor to You. Help us to keep our priorities in check and make the decisions You desire us to make. May our lives not be about earthly treasures, personal glory and fame, or self-gratification but about pleasing You and doing what is right in Your eyes.

In Jesus Name,

Amen
