Longing For Home

2 Corinthians 5:1-5 "For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come."

What comes to your mind when I say the word HOME? For many of us it brings back thoughts of a childhood home where many of our earliest memories were formed. For others it may involve more of a transient lifestyle of moving but holds memories of parents or relatives impacting your lives. Whatever comes to mind, I do know that it probably involves your parents or someone you were closest too but as time goes on and life takes it's toll, realistically, it is impossible to go back to what home once meant. God allows or arranges our lives by changing events so that, as Believers, we will recognize our true home which is in heaven. He wants us to know that earth is not our final dwelling place. His desire is that we don't walk by sight but by faith longing for something more.

Now this awareness does not mean that we check out from our every day life here on earth. On the contrary, we should be fully demonstrative in what God has purposed for us today. I read once that we will be of more earthly good if we are heavenly minded. If we make earth our mission field, our weigh station on the way to the new creation, we can greater appreciate every gift He gives us, live every day for His glory, and look forward to the heavenly home He has promised us.

Because of scripture, I am confident that we are just passing through this life. Romans 8:23 tells us that "we who have the first fruits of the Spirit groan, awaiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies." This redemption of our bodies will occur when our assignment here on earth is completed and God calls us home. When we accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior, He deposited the Holy Spirit into our hearts as an earnest down payment that there was more to come. It is a guarantee that this life on earth is only temporary, that the best is yet to come. Friends, we were not made for this world. We are strangers and aliens in a foreign land and we are not home yet, but the Bible says that one day will be and I'm looking forward to it.

Jesus knew that we would need a vision to inspire us to persevere while living in this world. He knew that we would have longings not fulfilled and He wanted to make sure that there was something that would keep us from being distracted from our common goal. He knew we would need something worth living for. Thus, eternal life clamors to us not that we can achieve it but that we have received it as a reward for our obedience to the call of our salvation. We are not saved by our good works but our good works demonstrate that we have been born again and in being born again, we will one day be raised to live with Jesus. We will be going Home never to be separated from Him again, praise be to God!

Personalize this prayer.

Dear Lord,

What a blessing You are to me! Thank you for the assurance in Your Word that You are preparing a better place for us all. The days get long and as much as I try, it is obvious that I'm in a foreign land. I pray that You will continue to equip me for all that You desire for me to do while I'm stationed here and that You will strengthen me to persevere. Help me to never give up or give in to the earthly desires that are flung my way especially when I'm tired. I long to be with You but I know that You're timing is perfect so I wait for You with a strong desire to go home to be with You permanently. Please shine Your light in and through me during this mission.

In Jesus Name,

Amen
