Ephesians 5:1-2 “Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.”
In theory, "walking in love" sounds simple enough but there is more to the actual practice of "walking in love" than meets the eye and it doesn't come naturally. If we are to "walk in love" as Jesus did, we must allow the Holy Spirit to fill us with His presence and intentionally make every effort to put others before ourselves.
True love by definition gives time, attention, and effort never seeking to please self. It spends energy and resources yet doesn't expect anything in return. Genuine love sacrifices personal wants and interests to put the needs of others first. Apart from God it's not an easy feat but empowered by God we're able to engage the world and like Ephesians 5:1-2 says, be a fragrant offering to Him.
What exactly does this "walking in love" look like? I believe that it is an attitude. Colossians 3:2 tells us to set our mind on things above, to think like Jesus did. We were given the mind of Christ at salvation now we just need to put it to use. Jesus didn't care who people were, what position they held, what they looked like, how clean they were, if they had money or not, what color their skin was or if they had anything to offer him or not. He didn't have to be right or feel the need to correct people's grammar. He just unconditionally loved them where they were at. He didn't try to one up their stories but intensely listened giving them His undivided attention. He had a warm welcoming demeanor that got people's attention and they longed to hear what He had to say. I imagine that He wasn't in a hurry to accomplish His agenda but took the time to be about whatever and whoever God sent His way.
Those are some pretty big shoes to fill; however, again, He doesn't expect for us to walk alone. He is right beside us and inside of us and will empower and enable us at all times and in every circumstance if we will just ask. We are called to "walk in love" not because people deserve our attention but that Christ loved us first (1 John 3:11). And because of His tremendous love, how can we not give back, how can we not imitate what He has done for us?
As you begin "walking in love" there are a few things to consciously keep in mind so that you don't get caught up in walking in tune with the world instead. It's important to think well of others, speak well of others, speak well to others, serve others, pray for others and do good to them. The call to "walk in love" challenges each of us to step out of our comfort zones and genuinely engage those that are not like us.
Hold on, dear friend. You are about to begin an amazing adventure that You will never regret! Go in peace . . .

Personalize this prayer.
Dear Lord,
You loved me first. You loved me when I was unlovable and I owe a great debt of gratitude for all that You've done for me. I want to give back. I want to show others what Your love looks like. It totally overwhelms me but I know that in You all things are possible so I'm trusting You to guide me on this venture. Purify my mind, my heart, and my lips and help me to be ever conscious of my every thought, word and act. I not only want to love others but I want to please You as well. Help me to be about Your business all through the day looking for ways that I can engage others. Show me where You are already at work so I can join You. May my life bring glory and honor to You, my God and my forever King.
In Jesus Name,
Amen
