The Most Secure Place

Psalm 91:1-12 "Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Surely He will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. You will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked. If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,” and you make the Most High your dwelling, no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent. For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone."

My life literally flashed before my eyes a few weeks ago as I escaped a very fatal automobile accident. Unfortunately, it would have been my fault but by the grace of God, I lived to tell about the details and His faithfulness to protect me. While driving through one of the most dangerous intersections in Tennessee, I had thought the traffic light was still green but it had changed to red and I should have stopped. As I continued driving through the now, "red light", 3 cars coming from three 3 different directions were heading straight for me. I swerved left, then right, then left again miraculously missing each car by the skin of my teeth. When I was able to breath again, I noticed that the rice dish I had laying uncovered on the passenger's seat lay right side up on the floor board with little mess and my drink that was open and uncapped lay propped up beside my lunch. My drink had not spilled either. With all the whipping of the car and the sudden hard breaking that food and drink should have been strewn all over my car and myself and I should have been laying in a pile of crushed automobiles broken and bruised. I saw first hand the fingerprints of God all over that incident! Evidently He still has things for me to do . . .

Psalm 91:1-12 speaks beautifully of God's protection of His own. To have the "Shelter of God" is to be under the shadow of His wings. Israel was in the protection of God's glory as they wandered in the wilderness for those 40 years. God sheltered them from the scorching sun that would have normally killed anyone who was exposed to the elements for long periods of time. Like the Israelites, He is our refuge in whom we can run to when we are scared, frightened, or don't know where to turn. He is our fortress against all spiritual and human attacks and we can trust Him because "He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High" is in one of the most secure places in the world. This should be a comfort for each of us.

He doesn't promise to protect everyone but only those in whom have believed in Him. Psalm 91:14 reminds us of God's heart, "because he/she loves me," says the Lord, "I will rescue him/her; I will protect him/her, for they acknowledge my name." Friends, I urge you, plead with you, that if you have never accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior that you take the time to do it right now. Time is of the essence. Why go at this journey of life alone when you can be reconciled to a God who will not only protect you at all times but lead and guide you the rest of your days?

Personalize this prayer.

Dear Lord,

I love and adore you and I want to worship you for the rest of my days. Thank you for protecting me and sheltering me from all that this world affords. Each day brings new dangers and new threats some of which I am probably unaware of so I ask that You command Your guardian angels to guard me and shield me at all times. Guide my steps and my thoughts and if I am going in the wrong direction, please turn me around. Help me to discern when anything is not from You and direct me to change my course of action. I want to be so in tune with You that You are my first thought each morning and my last thought each night. Blessed be Your name Your name when I'm found in a desert place, though I walk in the wilderness, blessed be Your name. I will turn all of my praises back to You despite my circumstances because You alone are my King. You are my strength, my shelter, my deliverer and my help in times of need. To You be all glory, honor and praise!

In Jesus Name,

Amen
